Eye tumors

Severe eye tumors: silent but serious threats

The most serious forms of eye tumors are lymphomas, melanomas and retinoblastomas.

Often, patients have no symptoms at first. The tumor is then discovered by chance during a routine eye exam. When symptoms do occur, painless loss of vision is the most common sign of an eye tumor.

Treatment options depend on the type and severity of the tumor and may include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Cryotherapy (freezing the tumor)
  • Laser treatment
  • Thermotherapy (heat therapy)
  • Surgery
  • Radiotherapy (radiation)
  • Enucleation (removal of the eye)
  • Or in slow growing tumors: careful observation

Possible complications include:

  • Recurrence or spread of the cancer
  • Emotional and social consequences
  • Side effects of the treatment
  • Permanent loss of vision

Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach are crucial to ensure the best possible outcome. If you have any doubts or concerns, do not hesitate to make an appointment with an ophthalmologist.
