Xanthelasma is a common condition that can lead to cosmetic discomfort. It is characterized by a yellow, fatty deposit that often does not diminish with age. This is a plate-like xanthoma on the eyelid (an accumulation of histiocytes or macrophages containing lipids such as digested cholesterol).
The condition often begins as a yellow spot that spreads and darkens over time. It occurs mainly on the upper or lower eyelids and can slowly enlarge over the years.
Causes and Mechanism
The fat deposits are formed when certain cells in the skin (histiocytes or macrophages) take up lipids, especially cholesterol esters. This leads to the development of a yellow, soft lesion that can spread.
Treatment
Like other xanthelasma formations, the condition is usually painless, but can be cosmetically disturbing. Treatment may include:
- Surgical removal of the lesions
- Laser treatment to remove the deposits
- Cryotherapy (freezing) or chemical treatments
Health considerations
Although xanthelasma usually does not pose any serious health risks, it can indicate high cholesterol or fat levels in the blood. It is advisable to undergo a medical examination to identify any underlying conditions.
