The benefits of laser surgery

  • Becoming independent of glasses and contact lenses: Increasing visual acuity and the quality of vision by treating minor optical defects that cannot be corrected with conventional glasses, thanks to the treatment of the patient's aberrometries through a tailor-made treatment guided by the topography of the cornea.
  • Contact lens intolerance or history of keratitis: Correct certain diseases of the corneal surface (hereditary dystrophies responsible for recurrent keratitis, Cogan's disease, etc.).
  • Avoiding the risk of infection by regular contact lens wear: (NB: a contact lens wearer is much more likely to develop an eye infection than after a single laser treatment, which influences the decision to perform a permanent laser treatment if possible).
  • Make certain sports easier: swimming, mountain biking, jogging, etc.
  • Save in the long term: no need for regular replacement of glasses or lenses.
  • Professional indications requiring good vision without glasses (selection criteria for the navy, police, etc.).

In addition to being fast and effective, the procedure offers several other benefits.

Comfort: After the procedure, patients find it very pleasant to wake up in the morning without having to wear glasses or contact lenses.

Less dependence: If your vision is not optimal, you are heavily dependent on your glasses or contact lenses. You have to constantly think about them. Many people feel uncomfortable when they forget them.

Safety regarding contact lenses: Today, we are more aware of the risks associated with contact lenses. A lens is a surface to which bacteria can adhere and multiply. In this way, they can enter the eye and cause scarring. Some people even lose their sight completely. The risk of infection is much lower with laser treatment.

The financial benefit:

Cheaper in the long run: Glasses and contact lenses represent an ongoing cost. A pair of glasses can cost between 3,000 and 15,000 euros over a lifetime. Contact lenses are even more expensive: their cost is estimated between 15,000 and 30,000 euros, including maintenance products and check-ups.

Laser treatment is usually only necessary once and costs between 3,500 and 4,300 euros for both eyes. However, this treatment is rarely reimbursed, and not all health insurance companies provide coverage.

Is the result permanent?

The eye remains stable after laser treatment. Nevertheless, one must take into account the fact that it is a biological organ that can evolve over the course of a lifetime. However, if your vision has already been stable for two years and your myopia is less than –6, the chance of vision deteriorating again after the procedure is less than one percent.
