Eye injuries

Eye injuries can occur in a variety of ways and are generally classified into three main groups:

  • Contusions of the eyeball, for example due to a hard blow or an object under pressure (such as a champagne cork)
  • Perforating eye injuries, caused by sharp objects such as a branch, nail or arrow
  • Foreign objects, both superficial and relatively harmless particles as well as deeper, intraocular objects that can seriously compromise vision

The damage can occur simultaneously in multiple structures of the eye: eyelid, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, lens capsule, lens, vitreous and retina. We do not list all possible injuries here, since the nature and severity vary greatly depending on the type of trauma.

Whatever the injury, always consult a specialist ophthalmology emergency department as soon as possible. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to preserve vision.
