What is PKR (Photorefractive Keratectomy)?
PKR is a safe and proven laser procedure that has been used since the 1990s to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. It is an alternative to LASIK, especially suitable for people with a thin cornea or certain corneal abnormalities.
How does PKR work?
In PKR, the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is first carefully removed. The ophthalmologist then uses an excimer laser to precisely reshape the underlying cornea so that light is focused correctly on the retina. This significantly improves vision.
Why choose PKR?
✅ Proven technology – successfully applied for decades
✅ Suitable for thin corneas – where LASIK is not possible
✅ No flap – so no risk of flap-related complications
✅ Precision – precise correction of various visual defects
Recovery after PKR
Healing is somewhat slower than with LASIK. Vision improves gradually over the first few days to weeks. Most patients resume their daily activities within 5 to 7 days. Complete stabilization of vision usually takes several weeks to months.
