This can lead to irritation, dryness of the eye, and an increased risk of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-duotone-midnight-filter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ophtalmologue-nord.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Ectropion.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17106\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Causes of Ectropion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ectropion can be caused by several factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Aging<\/strong>: The most common cause is the weakening of the tissues and muscles surrounding the eyelid due to natural aging, causing the eyelid to turn outward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Injuries or scars<\/strong>: Injuries or scars to the eyelid can change the normal position of the eyelid and lead to ectropion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Neurological Disorders<\/strong>: Conditions such as <strong>Bell\u2019s palsy<\/strong> or other paralysis of the facial nerve can cause the eyelid to turn outward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Congenital<\/strong>: In some people, ectropion may be present from birth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Chronic Inflammation<\/strong>: Long-term inflammation of the eyelid, such as in <strong>blepharitis<\/strong> (eyelid inflammation), can also lead to ectropion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Symptoms of Ectropion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of ectropion may include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Red, irritated eyes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Excessive tear production<\/strong> (due to the inability of the eyelid to spread the tear film properly)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Dry eyes<\/strong> and a burning sensation due to the lack of eyelid protection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Chronic eye infections<\/strong> due to the eyelid not closing completely, which makes the eye more susceptible to bacteria<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Eyelid that turns outward<\/strong>, often visible at the bottom of the eyelid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treatment of Ectropion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment for ectropion usually focuses on correcting the aesthetic and medical problems caused by the condition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Conservative treatment<\/strong>: In less severe cases, <strong>artificial tears<\/strong> or <strong>ointments<\/strong> may be prescribed to protect the eye and relieve symptoms of irritation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Surgery<\/strong>: The most effective treatment is a surgical procedure to reposition the eyelid. This prevents further damage to the eye and improves its cosmetic appearance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Treatment of underlying conditions<\/strong>: If the ectropion is caused by an underlying condition such as a neurological disease or chronic inflammation, treating that condition will also help improve the ectropion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Complications<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">If left untreated, ectropion can lead to <strong>dry eyes<\/strong>, <strong>eye infections<\/strong> and <strong>corneal damage<\/strong>. In severe cases, this can permanently damage vision.
