Dacryocystitis<\/strong> is an inflammation<\/strong> of the tear sac<\/strong> (dacryocyst), which is located in the inner corner of the eye, near the nose. It is usually caused by a blockage<\/strong> of the tear duct<\/strong>, which prevents tears from draining properly, leading to infection and inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Causes of Dacryocystite<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dacryocystite is often caused by the following factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Tear Duct Blockage<\/strong>: The tear duct can become blocked by mucus buildup<\/strong> or bacterial infections<\/strong>, which block the drainage of tears.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Infections<\/strong>: Usually caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus<\/strong> or Streptococcus pneumoniae<\/strong> that enter the tear sac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Chronic inflammation or infection<\/strong> of the tear ducts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Congenital abnormalities<\/strong>: Sometimes a blockage of the tear duct can be present from birth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Age<\/strong>: In older adults, weakened tear ducts may be more likely to lead to blockages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Symptoms of Dacryocystitis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The symptoms of dacryocystite can vary depending on the severity of the inflammation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Redness and swelling<\/strong> in the inner corner of the eye<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Pain<\/strong> or tenderness<\/strong> in the area around the tear sac<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Pus or discharge<\/strong> from the inner corner of the eye<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Tears<\/strong> or a watery eye<\/strong> due to a blockage of the tear duct<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Fever<\/strong> (in cases of more serious infection)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Treatment of Dacryocystite<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Treatment for dacryocystite depends on the severity of the condition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Antibiotics<\/strong>: For a bacterial infection, antibiotic eye drops<\/strong> or systemic antibiotics<\/strong> are often prescribed to treat the infection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Tear Sac Massage<\/strong>: In mild cases, massaging the tear sac may help to clear the blockage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Surgery<\/strong>: If the infection is recurring or if the tear duct is completely blocked, surgery may be necessary to clear the blockage. This may include a dacryocystorhinostomy<\/strong> (DCR), which creates a new drainage duct for the tears.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Warm compresses<\/strong>: Applying warm compresses to the affected area can help relieve inflammation and promote the healing process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Prevention of dacryocystite includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
