The swelling may become red, <strong>tender<\/strong> or painful, and may sometimes be accompanied by a <strong>warm<\/strong> feeling around the eyelid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-duotone-midnight-filter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"347\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/vision-centrum.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Chalazion-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vision-centrum.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Chalazion-2.jpg 347w, https:\/\/vision-centrum.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Chalazion-2-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vision-centrum.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Chalazion-2-16x12.jpg 16w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.392), 18px);px\"><strong>Natural course and infectiousness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">In most cases, a chalazion will disappear spontaneously within a few weeks without any medical consequences. A chalazion is not contagious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chalazion or stye (organlet)?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Although both a chalazion and a <strong>stye<\/strong> present as a lump in the eyelid, they are <strong>two different conditions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\">An <strong>orgelet<\/strong> is an <strong>acute<\/strong> infection of a sebaceous gland and is usually <strong>painful<\/strong> and inflamed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\">A <strong>chalazion<\/strong>, on the other hand, is <strong>not<\/strong> an infection, but a <strong>sterile inflammatory response<\/strong> of the body to accumulated sebum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">With a chalazion, the oil in the meibomian gland becomes <strong>too thick<\/strong> to drain normally. This causes it to build up and cause swelling. Sometimes the gland wall breaks, causing the oil to spill into the surrounding tissue. This leads to an inflammatory response, which can result in scarring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treatment of a chalazion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment is usually simple and may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Warm compresses<\/strong>: 5 to 10 minutes, <strong>four times a day<\/strong>, to reduce swelling and help the gland drain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Antibiotic eye drops or ointment<\/strong>: if there are signs of an associated bacterial infection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Cortisone injection<\/strong>: In rare cases, an anti-inflammatory drug may be injected directly into the chalazion to reduce swelling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Surgical removal<\/strong>: if the chalazion <strong>persistent<\/strong>, causes discomfort or for <strong>cosmetic reasons<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In case of recurring or multiple chalazions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">In <strong>frequent<\/strong> or multiple chalazions<\/strong>, consideration should be given to a <strong>general<\/strong> sebaceous gland disorder, such as <strong>acne rosacea<\/strong>.
